It is so amazing to see the sign in one of the streets in the Central district. The sign shows that the relief of the street is 1 in 5. The relief is so steep! With a steep relief, steps are designed along the streets. The streets are made up of steps, but not the flat ground we always see in other streets. The streets are narrow, when the big van enters the one of the streets, people along the street may need to increase their awareness since the steep relief may higher the risk of the van to loss control and it is really bulky along the narrow street.

We can see lots of commercial buildings and shops cluster along some streets. The designs of the shops are relatively higher class which are brand new and elegant. For example, we can find a high class candy shop which displays lots of candies which cannot easily be found in the supermarkets we commonly visit. Apart from this candy shop, along the same street, some coffee shops, travel agencies can be found. All are appeared in brand new design.

But, just turning our heads to the right in 90 degree, we can see some old residential buildings! Also, just next to the commercial street where I mentioned before, we can see a scene which is totally different from the commercial street. With a little number of commercial shops, along the same street, we can see some old residential buildings next to the shops, and we can also see a view of traditional market! Lots of “glass roots” are selling vegetables, fishes and meats. There are some traditional bakeries too.

Around the Central area, we can see a big contrast of new commercial activities and an old market scene appears at the same time. This implies that the Central district keeps on changing rapidly, and begins to develop as a commercial district in the future, which may replace the glass roots’ market. It is not difficult to find that some of the old residential buildings are abolished, and more high class residential buildings will be appeared in the future.

In this glass root market, we can see an area which was under constructed, and some high class residential buildings will be built in the future. Before the reestablishment, there were old residential buildings. People who lived in these buildings were forced to leave and they could receive compensations from Urban Renewal Authority. By observing this trend, it is believed that fewer and fewer glass roots will appear in the future. Will the warmth environment, the tight supportive social network of the citizens in the area, and the diversity of the shops also vanish in the future?
