:::Food in Central Mid-Levels:::

Lan Fong Yuen

Central District is a special place with various cuisines that not only contains western but also Asian food. For local food, there are some Hong Kong style restaurants. Lan Fong Yuen is a famous Chinese restaurant that we usually call “Cha Chan Teng” or ‘Hong Kong – style teahouse’. It is very popular and it provides different types of fast food. Every time, a long queue is appeared outside the restaurant. Lan Fong Tuen has stayed in Central for over 50 years which finally becomes a famous landmark here.

In the history of ‘Cha Chan Teng’: After the WWII, Western food became popular in Hong Kong because many foreigners lived here. However, the traditional Western food was expensive for public. Local diners started offering dishes with Western influences and reasonable prices, and that was the beginning of ‘Cha Chan Teng’.

Lan Fong Yuen is a Hong Kong 50s – style restaurant that divided into outdoor and indoor seats. In the photo on the left, it is outdoor view there that only provides some little chairs for people to take a rest and drink a cup of tea.

Hong Kong-style milk tea

In Hong Kong, there is a traditional Chinese tea culture. But local milk tea has been  appeared since 1950s. Different types of Sri Lankan black tea are mixed with evaporated or condensed milk. It is called Stocking Milk Tea because it is percolated in a stocking-like filter. The brew is smooth and creamy in texture. Hong Kong people love Stocking Milk Tea a lot, as same as coffee. The prize of Stocking Milk Tea is less – expensive that is only $14.

Ingredient:

  • Stocking - like filter

  • Evaporated or condensed milk

  • Tea

  • Sugar

Lan Fong Yuen uses filter to filtrate tea which aims at making it smooth and creamy. Finally, they also add evaporated or condensed milk and sugar. It takes around 1 to 2 minutes for making a cup of tea.
